Around town

From the beginning Antwerpen was a town with walls and defences. This way the town grew out in circles, and all historical and/or important things are within a rather close historical towncenter.
Antwerpen is a town that can be explored walking. For longer distances the public transport is a good alternative.

bus, streetcar & subway

De Lijn is taking care of all bus & tram transport in the whole Flemish region of Belgium.
The best public transport map you will find in the busstops & subway stations, and is printed on the Antwerp tourist map that is available in the tourist office in the station or on the marketplace.
Within the city zone - that is quite large - you make a ride for 1.5 € a single ride, or 8 € for a 10 ride card.
On some lines, and in the subway stations, you buy your ticket at the machines on the platform, and put the ticket in the validator once you step on the vehicle.
You can also buy tickets or 10 ride cards in the newspapershop around the corner of our street.
If you want to get a tram or bus, and are waiting alone at the stop, make a sign to the driver, or he might pass you by.

If you want to visit other cities, check out the national railway site. Cities like Brussels, Mechelen, Gent, Brugges en Lier are usually less than an hour away.

taxi

There are different companies in Antwerp, but they all have the same fares as indicated by the meter.
For a ride within the towncenter you will pay between 6 and 10 € per ride. It might be more at night.
For a long distance ride, for instance to Brussels Airport, you might ask for a fixed price before. To the airport you should pay something like 75 € if you ask for a fixed fee.
For a taxi you either call the company, or you get one on one of the taxi stands. Taxis in Belgium do not drive around empty looking for clients, so it is useless to try to catch one you see driving on the street.

boating

Antwerp is one of the major European harbours, so a boat is the ideal way to visit the harbour and the river.
Depending on the season there is a huge offer of boattrips, as well on the river as in the harbour. More info on the Flandria website.

bicycle

Though Antwerp is well walkable, and cubblestones and tramlines often are not realy bike-friendly, you can discover the city and the surrounding area by bike as well.
Bicycle rent can be found in the parking at central station in de fietshaven
